Camp Nelson National Monument

This Civil War site was a camp that originally covered 4,000 acres. The Union Army turned the rolling pasture land into an enormous base for their operations. The site is bounded by the Kentucky River, and Hickman Creek, both with vertical limestone cliffs called the Palisades. Today the park includes 525 acres, a national cemetery, and a historical museum.
